What equipment do I need to participate as an amateur radio operator?

To participate on the air you must first obtain an FCC license through a participating and accredited VE (Volunteer Examiner) group.  This can be done in many ways either in person testing, online or at designated field events.  Check out the resources section for additional information to obtain your official license.

Additionally to get on the air after receiving a license, you will need equipment to transmit and receive from as well as an antenna and the appropriate cables, connectors, coax to connect all.  Each person must evaluate what it is they want to do with license to determine specific equipment purchases.  It is a good practice to reach out to someone with experience in this area before making large purchases.

The current licensing cost from the FCC is $35.00 this does not include testing fee's from an accredited VE, nor does that include price for any materials in which you may wish to purchase to help you study for the exams such as books or online courses.  Please note there are many free study resources available online or to download some of which will be listed under the resources tab on our website.
