I became a licensed operator in 1993 as KE4OPI, as well as my dad Noel Edwards, KU4GZ, whom is now a SK. He was a missionary to Southern Mexico and utilized ham radio as our means of communication. At that time in the area, the phone service was still not that good. I took up his call about two years ago. Currently I serve as the President of the H.H.A.R.C. I enjoy POTA hunting and activating. I like using all modes of ham radio to include voice and digital. As can be seen on my QRZ page I have a few different radios and continue to buy more and more gear. I enjoy old gear like the Ten-Tec transceivers. Usually, I can be found on the 20 M or 17 M bands. I also am typically on in the evening and can be found on 3.923 on the Tar Heel Emergency Net. I hope to hear you on the air, if you hear me give a call and let’s talk a bit.

I began my journey into electronics and communications at 8 years old. Built a crystal radio kit to listen to AM broadcast radio stations. Worked at a local TV/Radio repair shop as an apprentice learning about basic electronic components, testing and replacing vacuum tubes and utilizing test equipment at 10 years old. Purchased my first CB radio, power supply, base microphone and mounted a vertical antenna on a roof mast at 12 years old. Made numerous long-distance contacts including South American countries from our home QTH in Minnesota. Studied AC house wiring and DC circuits throughout High School. Enrolled in Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Wadena, MN in 1978. Received my Electronics AA degree in 1980 and passed my FCC General Radio Operators License with a Radar endorsement. Hired by Motorola Communications, Inc, Schaumburg, IL in 1980. Spent my entire 34-year career working for and with Motorola as a sub-contractor. Retired and started my HAM radio hobby in 2024 with a General Class license.
Current member of AARL, 3 local HAM clubs, 4 National Nets and Net Control station for the Appalachia Amateur Radio Club in Murphy NC. Upgraded to Extra Class license in 2026. Enjoy working all bands and modes, POTA, SOTA, WWFF, DX, Contesting and Awards. Been having fun making worldwide QSO’s and learning every day!
